What Causes a ‘Volcano’ and Why Do They Erupt So Violently?

A volcano is like a giant cookie jar inside the Earth. When it gets full of hot, sticky goo called magma, it can't hold in anymore, poof! It explodes out through a hole on top, making a mess and sometimes even lighting up the sky with lava.

If the magma is really thick or has gas bubbles inside, the pressure builds up like when you shake a soda can. When it finally bursts out, it’s like the Earth itself is shouting, 'I’m full!'
