The Sun has been having a very active space party, and that’s why we’re seeing more solar flares.
What is a Solar Flare?
Imagine you're on a playground swing, going back and forth. When you go high enough, you let out a big laugh, that's like a solar flare. The Sun does something similar when it gets really excited. It lets out huge bursts of energy in the form of light and heat, which we can sometimes see as bright flashes on our TVs or feel as extra warm days.
Why Is the Sun So Active?
The Sun has a kind of space heartbeat, called its solar cycle. Every 11 years, it goes from being calm to very active, like going from a sleepy nap to a wild dance party. We’re currently in one of those lively times, so there are more solar flares than usual.
It’s like when you're playing with your friends and everyone gets excited at the same time, things get louder, brighter, and more fun!
Examples
