What Caused The Great Depression To Last So Long?

The Great Depression lasted so long because people stopped spending money, and that made everything else stop too.

Imagine you have a lemonade stand, and everyone in your neighborhood buys lemonade every day. But one day, no one comes, not even your best friend. You don’t make any money, so you can't buy lemons anymore. Soon, your neighbor's ice cream truck also stops running because no one is buying ice cream either.

This is like what happened in the 1930s, people stopped spending money on things they used to buy, and that made businesses fail, which made people lose jobs, and then they had even less money to spend. It became a big loop, or cycle, that was hard to break.

Think of the economy like a playground where everyone is playing together. If one kid stops swinging, others might stop too, soon, no one is having fun anymore. The swings don’t move, and it feels like the whole playground has gone quiet.

The cycle kept going because people were scared, and once you're scared, it's hard to start spending again, even if things are getting better.
