What are voting rules?

Voting rules are like the instructions for playing a game where everyone gets to choose their favorite thing.

Imagine you and your friends want to pick a new toy to share, maybe a ball, a puzzle, or a robot. Each of you gets to say which one you like best. Voting rules tell us how we count all those choices so we can decide what wins.

How it works

When everyone picks their favorite, the voting rule helps figure out who wins by counting how many votes each choice got. For example, if most people pick the robot, then the robot gets to be the new shared toy. That’s like a fair way to make sure everyone’s voice is heard.

Different kinds of voting rules

Sometimes, there are different ways to count the votes. One rule might say that the option with the most votes wins, that's called plurality. Another rule might let you pick more than one favorite, or even rank them in order. These changes can make the game a little trickier, but also more fun and fair for everyone.

Voting rules are like the special helpers that keep your toy-picking game going smoothly!
