What are volcanoes?

Volcanoes are earth’s way of sneezing, big, fiery eruptions that happen when things deep inside the ground get too hot and excited.

Imagine you have a jar full of warm soup, and it's sealed tight. If you shake it up or heat it more, the lid might pop off with a bloop! That’s kind of what happens with volcanoes, only way bigger. Deep under Earth, there are molten rocks (like really hot lava), and when they get pushed upward, they can burst out through cracks in the ground, creating an eruption.

What makes them go?

Think of a volcano like a pressure cooker. Inside Earth, there's a lot of heat and movement, it’s kind of like the soup boiling inside your pressure cooker. When that pressure gets too big, boom! The hot stuff comes out in a big, messy way, just like when you open the lid of a pressure cooker and steam rushes out.

Sometimes volcanoes are quiet, they just ooze lava slowly. Other times, they’re wild and loud, like when your pressure cooker explodes! Volcanoes are earth’s way of sneezing, big, fiery eruptions that happen when things deep inside the ground get too hot and excited.
