What are vocals?

Vocals are the sounds people make when they sing or talk.

What do vocals sound like?

Think about your favorite song, the part where the singer is singing. That’s vocals! It's like when you say, "Hello!" or laugh really loud, that’s also vocals. Just like how a dog barks or a cat meows, people make sounds with their voices to express feelings and ideas.

How do vocals work?

Your voice comes from your lungs, which push air up through your trachea (that's the tube in your throat), and out of your mouth or nose. When you sing or talk, your vocal cords, two little muscles inside your throat, vibrate to make sounds.

If you're singing a song, it’s like playing a musical instrument, your body is the instrument, and your voice is the music!
