What are suspension bridges?

A suspension bridge is like a rope swing that connects two big places across a deep space, such as a river or a valley.

Imagine you're on a playground and there's a long rope between two trees. You grab the rope and swing across to the other side, that’s kind of how a suspension bridge works, but much bigger!

How it stands up

A suspension bridge uses strong ropes or cables that hang from tall towers on either end. These ropes hold up the road or walkway in the middle. It's like having really thick strings holding up your favorite toy, the more strings you use, the stronger it is.

When cars or people cross the bridge, the ropes stretch a little bit, but they stay strong and steady. The towers help keep everything from falling down, just like how the trees hold up your rope swing.

Why we build them

We build suspension bridges when we need to go across places that are too wide or deep for regular bridges. They’re used in cities and even over oceans, like the Golden Gate Bridge! It’s a fun way to move from one place to another, just like swinging on a rope swing.
