What are storms?

Storms are big, wild movements in the sky that make the weather go crazy.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy car on a smooth floor, it zooms along easily. Now imagine someone suddenly kicks the floor really hard, whoosh! Your toy car gets thrown around like it's in a race. That’s kind of what happens during a storm.

What makes storms happen?

Storms start when warm air and cold air meet, they’re like two kids who don’t want to share their toys. The warm air is lighter, so it tries to float up, while the cold air is heavier and pushes down. This battle between hot and cold makes the air swirl around, creating wind.

What happens during a storm?

When the air swirls really fast, it can pick up water droplets from the sky, like when you splash in a puddle on a rainy day. These droplets ride the swirling air and fall as rain or even as big drops of thunder!

Sometimes, if the air is really wild, you might hear thunder, which is just the sound of the storm shouting as it moves around.
