What are stars and stripes?

Stars and stripes are flags that show who you are or where you're from, like a special badge for a group of people.

Imagine you’re in a big playground with lots of kids, and each kid wears a different colored shirt. If someone asks you, “Who are you?” you can just point to your shirt. That’s kind of what the stars and stripes do for countries.

The stars on the flag are like little lights in the sky, and they show how many states there are in a country, right now, there are 50 states, so we have 50 stars!

The stripes are like the steps of a staircase. There are 13 of them, and each one stands for a special group of people who helped create the country long ago.
