What are square roots?

A square root is like finding a friend who, when you multiply them by themselves, gives you a special number called a square.

Imagine you have 16 toy blocks. If you arrange them into a perfect square, 4 blocks on each side, that makes a nice tidy shape. The number that helps make this square is 4, because 4 × 4 = 16. So, the square root of 16 is 4.

How It Works

Think of a square root as the "undo" of multiplying a number by itself. If you know the total (like your 16 blocks), the square root helps you find what number was used to make that total, just like counting how many blocks are on each side of your square.

A Simple Example

Let’s say you have 25 marbles and you want to arrange them in a perfect square. How many would be on each row? That's the square root of 25, which is 5, because 5 × 5 = 25.

So, just like knowing how many blocks are on one side helps you build your square, the square root lets you go from the total to that special number.

Examples

  1. Finding the square root of 16 is like figuring out what number multiplied by itself gives you 16, it's 4!
  2. If a garden has an area of 25 square meters, and it's perfectly square, each side must be 5 meters long.
  3. A square root can also be negative because -5 times -5 is also 25.
