What are special kinds of minerals?

Special kinds of minerals are minerals that have extra features or look a little different from regular ones, like how some candies have sprinkles and others don’t.

Imagine you're playing with building blocks. Most of them are just plain red or blue, but some might be shiny, glittery, or even striped inside. Those special ones are like special kinds of minerals.

Some Minerals Have Sparkle

Some minerals are so sparkly that they look like tiny gemstones, like diamonds, which are a type of mineral made from carbon. Or think about quartz, which can be clear, pink, or even purple (like amethyst), depending on what’s inside it.

Some Minerals Are Shiny or Soft

Other minerals might feel soft like chalk or be super hard like steel. For example, graphite is the stuff pencils are made of, it’s a mineral that feels slippery and leaves marks on paper. But if you look closely, it's related to diamond, which is also made from carbon!

So just like how some toys have extra features, some minerals have special traits that make them stand out!
