What are social determinants?

Social determinants are things that help or hurt people depending on where they live and what happens around them.

Imagine you have two friends who both want to grow really tall, one lives in a house with a big garden, lots of vegetables, and the other lives in a small apartment with not much food. The first friend gets more chances to be healthy and strong because of their surroundings, that's a social determinant.

Like a Playground

Think about a playground. If you go to a park with swings, slides, and friends to play with, it’s easier to have fun and stay happy than if you go to a park with no toys and no one to play with. The things around you, like food, friends, and even where you live, are social determinants that help shape your life.

Every Day Examples

Sometimes you can see social determinants in action every day. Like when someone has more money for school supplies or a better home to study in. These are social determinants too, they give people different chances in life, just like having a bigger garden gives one friend better food than the other.
