What are slats?

Slats are long, flat pieces that help airplanes fly better when they’re going fast or flying low.

Imagine you're pushing a toy car on the floor, it goes smoothly. But if you put little sticks in front of the wheels, like slats, the car can turn more easily and go around corners without skidding. That’s what slats do for airplanes!

When an airplane is moving quickly or taking off, the air flows over its wings. Sometimes it doesn’t flow as smoothly as it should, kind of like how water might splash when you hit a puddle with your foot.

Slats are like extra flaps that stick out from the front part of the wing. They help guide the air more gently, so the airplane can stay up in the sky without needing to flap its wings too hard.

Think about when you're playing with a paper airplane, if you fold the front part a little, it flies better. Slats work like that extra folded part, helping big airplanes go faster or turn more easily.
