What are semi-presidential or parliamentary systems?

A semi-presidential or parliamentary system is a way that people choose leaders in a country, like picking team captains for a big game.

Imagine you're playing soccer with your friends, and there are two ways to pick who leads the team. In one way, everyone votes for the best player and the best captain at the same time. That's like a parliamentary system, the people choose both the leader of the team (the prime minister) and the head coach (the president), but sometimes they can be different people.

In another way, you might vote just for the head coach first, and then the best player picks who will help them lead the team. That's like a semi-presidential system, the people choose one leader (like the president) first, and then that leader chooses their helper (like the prime minister).

Sometimes, if the team isn’t happy with the captain or the coach, they can change them, just like in real countries!
