A rope is like a long string you can hold and pull, and a pulley is like a wheel that helps make pulling easier.
Imagine you're trying to lift a big toy box from the floor to your bed. It's heavy, and it takes a lot of effort. Now imagine there’s a wheel attached to the bed, when you wrap the rope around the wheel and pull down on the rope, the box goes up instead of you having to push it up. That wheel is a pulley, and the rope helps make lifting easier.
How pulleys work
A pulley acts like a helper. When you pull down on one end of the rope, the other end moves up, just like when you're playing tug-of-war, but instead of pulling against someone, you’re helping something move.
If there are two pulleys, it's even easier! You can use both hands to pull the rope, and the heavy thing you want to lift feels lighter. It’s like having a team of friends help you carry your backpack up the stairs, the more helpers you have, the less each one has to do.
