What are regions of compression?

Regions of compression are parts of something that get squished together so they take up less space.

Imagine you have a slinky, that wiggly toy that stretches and bounces. Now, think about pushing both ends of the slinky toward each other. What happens? The middle part gets squished or compressed, right? That’s a region of compression!

Like a Squeeze in a Crowd

Imagine you're at a crowded playground during recess. At first, there's lots of space between kids, they can run and play freely. But then the bell rings for snack time, and all the kids rush toward the same table. Suddenly, the area around the table becomes really tight, that’s like a region of compression, where people are pushed together in one spot.

Just like how the slinky gets shorter when you push it, or how the playground space feels smaller when everyone crowds around the snack table, regions of compression happen whenever things get squished together.
