What are proportions?

Proportions are like fair sharing, when you split things so everyone gets the same amount.

Imagine you and your best friend both want to eat cookies from the same jar. If there are 8 cookies total, and you both get 4, that’s a proportion because you’re both getting the same share of the cookies. It's like dividing a pizza, if it has 8 slices and you each take 4, you're both happy.

When Things Grow or Shrink Together

Now think about building with blocks. If you have a tower that is 2 blocks wide and 3 blocks tall, and then you double the size of the tower, now it's 4 blocks wide and 6 blocks tall, that’s also a proportion. All parts grow by the same amount, just like when you blow up a balloon, everything gets bigger together.

Proportions in Real Life

When you mix juice, proportions help too! If your favorite juice is 1 part concentrate to 3 parts water, and you want more juice for a party, you can double it: 2 parts concentrate to 6 parts water. That way, the taste stays the same, just like when you split cookies or build towers.

Proportions are about keeping things balanced and fair, whether with food, blocks, or anything else! Proportions are like fair sharing, when you split things so everyone gets the same amount.
