What are plants?

Plants are living things that grow from the ground and make food using sunlight.

Imagine plants like little chefs who cook their own meals using sunlight instead of a stove. Just like you need food to stay healthy, plants use what they make to grow strong and tall.

How Plants Make Their Food

When sunlight shines on leaves, something special happens, the leaves catch the light, just like solar panels on a house. They mix it with water from the soil and air from around them to create food. This food helps plants grow new leaves, stems, and roots.

The Parts of a Plant

  • Roots are like feet that hold the plant in place and drink water.
  • Stems act as straws, moving water and food up and down.
  • Leaves are the chefs who cook using sunlight, they're usually green because of a special ingredient called chlorophyll, which helps them catch light.

Plants don’t move around like you or your dog do, but they still work hard every day to stay healthy and grow. Some even make fruits and flowers to share with animals and humans!
