What are pigments?

Pigments are the colorful helpers that make things look bright and fun.

Imagine you have a box of crayons, each one is like a pigment. When you draw on paper, the crayon leaves its color behind, making your picture come to life. That's what pigments do: they give color to things like paint, food, or even your skin when you use sunscreen.

Think of pigments as little color chefs. When light shines on something, these chefs mix their colors with the light and show us what we see. If you put red pigment in a glass of water, it looks red, just like how a red crayon makes your drawing look red.

Pigments are everywhere! Fruits get their color from pigments too, strawberries are red because they have red pigments inside them. Even your favorite shirt might have special pigments in the fabric to keep it looking bright after many washes.
