What is a pattern?
A pattern is something that happens the same way over and over again. Think of your morning routine: you wake up, brush your teeth, eat cereal, and then get dressed. That’s a pattern, it repeats every day like clockwork!
What is a shift?
A shift is when something changes or moves, like when you switch from breakfast to lunchtime. Maybe you used to have cereal for breakfast, but now you have toast. That change in your morning routine is a shift.
Patterns help you know what’s coming next, and shifts let you know things are changing up a bit. Just like the sky changes from day to night, that's a shift too! Patterns and shifts are like routines and changes you see every day, like your favorite breakfast or when it's time to go to bed.
Examples
- During winter, the days get shorter, this is a shift in day length.
- The seasons changing from summer to fall is an example of a pattern shift.
