What are obligate carnivores?

Obligate carnivores are animals that must eat meat to stay healthy and alive.

Imagine you're a kid who only eats pizza, never salad or soup. If you ate nothing but pizza, you’d be like an obligate carnivore! These animals can't live on plants or other food types; they need meat every single day.

Just like how you might get tired and grumpy if you didn’t eat your favorite food, obligate carnivores feel sick or weak if they don’t eat meat. Some of them, like cats, can't even process plant-based foods very well, it's like trying to drink water through a straw that's too small!

You might have seen one in your house: a cat! They're classic obligate carnivores. They love chasing little toys, pouncing on them, and then eating them, just like they would with real mice.

Other animals like cheetahs or wolves are also obligate carnivores. They hunt other animals to eat because that’s all they can survive on.
