What are numbers or symbols?

Numbers and symbols are tools we use to understand and describe the world around us, just like a toy box helps you organize your favorite toys.

Imagine you have 5 red blocks in your hand. You can count them: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. That’s using numbers, they help you know how many things you have. If you give 2 blocks to a friend, now you have 3 left. Numbers help you keep track of changes.

Now think about symbols. A symbol is like a special picture or sign that stands for something else. For example, the letter “A” is a symbol, it helps you know how to say and write the sound “ah.” Or maybe your favorite shirt has a logo on it, that’s also a symbol! It tells you what kind of shirt it is without saying a word.

How Numbers and Symbols Work Together

When you see a clock, the numbers show how much time has passed, and the symbols (like hour hands) show what time it is. Together, they help you know when to go to bed or when it’s time for snacks!

Numbers and symbols are like friends, they work together so you can understand more about your world.
