What are number bases?

Number bases are like different ways to count using groups, just like how you might group your toys when cleaning up.

Imagine you have 10 blocks. If you're counting in base 10 (which is what we usually use), you say "10" because that’s one full group of 10. But if you were counting in base 2, like a robot who only knows 0 and 1, it would take more steps to count the same number.

How bases work

In base 10 (our usual way), we use digits from 0 to 9. Once we hit 10, we start a new group, that's why we write "10" for ten blocks.

In base 2, there are only two digits: 0 and 1. So counting goes like this:

0, 1, 10, 11, 100, 101..., just like how you might count with your fingers (each finger is either up or down).

Try it out!

Think of a clock face, it uses base 12. We go from "12" back to "1", just like counting in different groups.

Number bases help computers, clocks, and even your toys understand how to count better! Number bases are like different ways to count using groups, just like how you might group your toys when cleaning up.
