What are national elections?

National elections are like a big group vote where people choose who will be their leaders for a whole country.

Imagine you and your friends decide who gets to be the leader of your playground. You all get to pick one person, and that person becomes the boss of the playground, they make the rules and help everyone have fun. That’s kind of like what happens in national elections, but instead of a playground, it's a whole country.

In national elections, people vote for candidates, these are the people who want to be leaders, just like how you might pick your friend Sam or Lisa to be the boss. Each person gets one vote, and whoever gets the most votes becomes the leader of the country.

We do national elections so that everyone has a say in who leads them. Just like you get to choose who makes the rules on the playground, people in a country get to pick who will make the rules for everyone, and that helps keep things fair and fun for all.
