What are minutes?

Minutes are tiny pieces of time that help us count how long things take.

Imagine you're playing a game where each turn lasts for just a little while, like when you and your friend take turns jumping on the trampoline. Each jump could be one minute. If you both jump 60 times, that’s about an hour! So minutes are like the number of jumps in a game.

How we use minutes

When you watch a timer go from 60 to 59 to 58… all the way down to 0, each number is one minute. You might see this when baking cookies, the recipe says "bake for 12 minutes," so you count them like counting your favorite toys.

Minutes in a bigger picture

There are 60 minutes in an hour, just like there are 12 months in a year. If you're waiting for something fun to happen, like the school bell ringing, you might be counting how many minutes until it happens.

So next time you see the word "minute," think of it as one little chunk of time, like one jump on the trampoline or one number on a timer!
