What are mass extinctions?

A mass extinction is when a lot of different animals and plants disappear all at once, like a big cleanup day in nature.

Imagine you have a toy box full of your favorite toys: cars, dolls, blocks, and action figures. Now imagine that one day, someone comes in and takes away almost all of them, just like that! That’s what happens during a mass extinction. Many animals and plants can’t survive the changes in their world, so they disappear.

Let’s say you're a dinosaur living in the jungle. One day, the ground shakes, big rocks fall from the sky, and the air gets really hot, maybe even your whole world turns into fire! That might feel like getting hit by a giant wave of heat while playing outside on a very sunny day. If you can't run away or hide, it's hard to survive.

Sometimes, animals take a long time to disappear, like how it takes your toys days to get picked up after a big playdate. Other times, they vanish all at once, like when the toy box gets emptied in just one go!

So a mass extinction is like nature having its biggest cleanup day ever, and many of its favorite toys (animals and plants) are gone!
