Lithium extraction from geothermal brines is like finding hidden treasure in hot water that comes up from deep inside the Earth.

Imagine you have a big pot of soup on the stove. The soup is hot, and if you let it sit for a while, some things might settle at the bottom, maybe tiny bits of salt or pepper. Now imagine that soup is coming out of a volcano or an underground lake, and instead of salt and pepper, there’s lithium hiding in there.

How It Works

Geothermal brines are like super-salty hot water found deep underground. When we bring this hot water to the surface, it's full of minerals, one of them is lithium, which is used to make batteries for phones and electric cars.

To get the lithium out, we let the hot water cool down a little bit. As it cools, some of the minerals come out of the water like sediment in a glass of lemonade when you leave it sitting. Then we can scoop out the lithium, just like picking out sugar crystals from your drink!

Sometimes people use special chemicals to help pull the lithium out more quickly, but it’s all about getting that hidden treasure from hot water, one step at a time!
