What are leaky balloons?

Leaky balloons are balloons that slowly let air out, making them shrink over time.

Imagine you have a balloon filled with air, it's round and full, like a happy face. But if the balloon has a tiny hole or a weak spot, some of the air will escape through it. That’s what happens with leaky balloons. They lose air little by little until they're small and flat.

How leaky balloons work

Think of the balloon as a sack that holds air inside. If there's a tiny tear or hole in the sack, the air will slowly slide out through it, just like water leaking from a sponge with a pinprick.

Sometimes you might not even notice the hole at first, it could be so small that only a little air escapes each day. That’s why the balloon doesn’t pop all at once; it just gets smaller and smaller until one day, it's almost flat.

You can find leaky balloons anywhere, in the classroom, on a party table, or even in your own room. They’re like slow-moving sneaky little air thieves!
