What are layoffs?

A layoff is when a company decides it can't keep all its workers anymore and sends some home.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy box full of blocks. You have 10 friends helping you build a big castle, but then the game changes, maybe there's not enough space or time to finish everything. The grown-up in charge has to choose who stays to keep building and who has to go home for now. That’s like a layoff, some people get to stay with their job, and others are let go because the company needs fewer workers.

When someone gets laid off, it feels like being taken out of the game before it's over. They might not know if they'll come back later or if they’ll have a new game to play somewhere else. Sometimes, companies promise they’ll bring people back when things get better, but sometimes they don’t.

If you're one of the ones who gets let go, it's like being sent home with your backpack full of blocks, ready to find another castle to build in a different place. You might not know where you'll end up next, but you still have all your blocks, and that’s something to be happy about!
