What are irrational parts?

Irrational parts are numbers that can’t be written as simple fractions, just like how some toys can’t be split evenly between friends.

Imagine you have a pizza, and you want to share it with your friend. If the pizza is cut into 4 equal slices, each person gets 2 slices, that’s easy, like the number 1/2 or 3/4, which are called rational numbers because they can be written as a fraction.

But now imagine you have a square pizza, and you want to find out how long one side is if the diagonal is exactly 1 meter. You’d use something called the Pythagorean theorem, and you’d find that each side is about 0.707 meters, but it doesn’t end there! It keeps going on forever without repeating, like a never-ending story.

That kind of number is called an irrational number, because you can’t write it as a simple fraction. It’s like trying to describe the shape of clouds, you just can’t put it into neat boxes or slices!

What makes them special?

Irrational numbers go on forever without repeating, like when you count your steps and never stop. You’ll find them in things like circles (π), squares (like √2), and even in music!
