What are intensive care units?

An intensive care unit is like a superhero team that helps people who are really sick or hurt get better faster.

Imagine you're playing in the park and you fall off your bike and get a big boo-boo. You might go to the doctor, but if you were really badly hurt, maybe even knocked out, you’d need to be in a special room where doctors and nurses work extra hard to help you heal. That's what an intensive care unit is like: it's a place with lots of superheroes (doctors and nurses) who use special tools and machines to give extra help to people who are very sick.

In the regular hospital room, you might just have a nurse checking on you every now and then. But in an intensive care unit, there are more doctors and nurses, and they use cool gadgets like heart monitors that beep and machines that help you breathe if your lungs are tired.
