What are integrals?

An integral is like adding up many tiny pieces to find out how much you have all together, it’s a way to sum things that change smoothly.

Imagine you're filling up a bath with water, and the water level goes up little by little. Each second, a bit more water comes in. If you wanted to know exactly how much water was added after a few minutes, you could think of each tiny moment as a piece, and adding them all together would give you the total amount, that’s what an integral does!

Counting Tiny Steps

Let’s say you're walking from your house to the park. You take one step at a time. If you count how many steps you took, you get the total distance walked. An integral is like counting all those tiny steps, even when they’re so small you can’t see them.

Measuring Area Under a Curve

If you draw a wiggly line on paper and want to know how much space it covers, like the area between the line and the bottom of the page, an integral helps you calculate that. It’s like measuring the size of a garden with many small rectangular sections, then adding them all up to find the total area.

So whether you're counting steps or measuring areas, integrals help you add up lots of little pieces to see the big picture!
