What are individual sensory needs?

Everyone has individual sensory needs, which means everyone feels things a little differently and might need special help to understand or enjoy what's around them.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy, it’s soft, bumpy, and makes a click noise every time you press it. Now imagine someone else is playing with the same toy, but they find it too loud or too rough. That's because their senses work differently. Just like how some kids love eating ice cream on a hot day, others might think it’s too cold or too messy.

What Are Sensory Needs?

Sensory needs are about how we feel things, like touch, sound, sight, and even smell. Some people might be really sensitive to loud noises, just like how some kids get scared when they hear a fire alarm. Others might need extra help seeing something clearly, like needing glasses or sitting closer to the front of the classroom.

Why It Matters

When we understand someone's individual sensory needs, we can help them feel more comfortable and happy, whether it’s in school, on the playground, or at home. Like giving a quiet corner for kids who get overwhelmed by loud noises, or letting someone wear headphones to block out extra sound.
