What are incandescent lamps?

An incandescent lamp is a simple light bulb that glows because electricity makes a tiny metal wire inside get super hot.

Think about how your toaster gets red and warm when you press the button down. An old-fashioned light bulb works in almost exactly the same way, just on a bigger scale. Inside the clear glass globe sits a thin, curly filament. This filament is usually made of tungsten, a metal that can handle intense heat without melting away quickly.

When you flip the switch, electricity rushes through the filament. Because the wire is very thin and tight, it resists the flow of electrons. This resistance creates friction at a microscopic level, turning electrical energy into thermal energy (heat) and radiant energy (light). The wire gets so hot that it starts to glow white yellow, much like the metal bands on a pizza oven or a heated curling iron.

The secret is that heat is light in this case. Most other bulbs try to be clever by using gases or LEDs to create light differently. But an incandescent bulb is straightforward: it just gets hot until it shines. The glass envelope protects the filament from burning up like a matchstick, keeping oxygen away so the metal can stay bright for thousands of hours.
