What are hittites?

The Hittites were a powerful group of people who lived a long time ago in a place that is now Turkey.

Imagine you are building the tallest block tower in your room. The Hittites were like the kingmakers of the ancient world, ruling over a big kingdom near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. They were famous for two main things: being great warriors and being the first people to discover how to work with iron.

Think of iron like the steel in your bike or the pots in your kitchen. Before the Hittites, people mostly used bronze, which is softer and breaks easier. The Hittites found iron ore, heated it in super-hot fires, and hammered it into strong tools and weapons. This made their swords sharper and their shields tougher than anyone else’s.

The Hittites were like the original trade travelers. They set up shop along busy paths between Egypt and Mesopotamia. They traded tin, copper, and textiles, acting like the middlemen of the ancient world. Their king, Suppiluliuma I, was like a neighborhood watch captain who kept peace by making treaties with neighbors.

They left behind huge stone gates and clay tablets written in cuneiform, which is like drawing pictures with a reed stylus. Today, we study them to understand how early societies organized power and technology.

Their iron tools changed farming and fighting forever.

The Hittite Empire fell around 1200 BCE, but their legacy lives on in the iron tools we still use every day.
