What are highlighted words?

Highlighted words are words that stand out because they're special in a sentence or a story.

Imagine you’re reading a book about animals. Most of the words are just there to help you understand what’s happening, like "The cat sat on the mat." But if the word "cat" is bold, or has a different color, it means it's important, maybe that's the main character, or something cool happens to it.

Why do we highlight words?

Sometimes, people use highlighted words to help you learn new vocabulary. Like if you're learning about animals and you see "The lion roared loudly," the word "lion" might be highlighted so you know that’s a key part of the sentence or a new word to remember.

Highlighting can also show emotions

If you’re reading a story, and the word "happy" is in bold or has a bright color, it means the character feels really good, like when you get your favorite snack after school!

So, highlighted words are just like spotlighting something fun or important in a sentence, they help you notice what’s special.
