Gorillas: The Gentle Giants of the Primate World

Gorillas are huge, gentle apes who live in the deep green jungles of Africa, and they are our closest cousins in the animal kingdom. Imagine a super-strong human who loves to munch on leaves and hangs out in families. They spend most of their time on the ground, walking on their knuckles like a four-legged tank that never tires.

Big Bodies and Leafy Lunches

These giants look like very hairy, muscular humans. They have big, broad chests and long arms that help them climb trees and swing from branch to branch. Think of their arms like the sturdy handles on a shopping cart, but much stronger. They eat mostly plants, just like you eat salad, but on a much bigger scale. A single gorilla can eat up to 35 pounds of food every day! That is like eating 70 bananas in one afternoon.

Family Life and Gentle Giants

Gorillas live in groups called troops, led by a strong male called a silverback. He protects everyone, kind of like a big brother who keeps the family safe. Even though they are huge, they are usually very calm and friendly. You might see them grooming each other, sharing food, or playing with sticks and leaves. They communicate by making sounds, changing facial expressions, and using their bodies, much like how you use your hands and voice to talk to friends.

Did you know? A gorilla’s big chest is like a cozy blanket that keeps them warm in the cool jungle mornings.
