What are geometric figures?

Geometric figures are shapes you can find all around you, just like building blocks for everything from toys to houses.

Imagine you have a set of building blocks, some are long and straight, others are round, and some are pointy. These are like geometric figures: they're the basic shapes that make up things in our world.

Shapes You Touch Every Day

  • A circle is like a pizza, round and smooth all around.
  • A square looks like a chocolate bar, four straight sides, all the same length.
  • A triangle is like a slice of pizza, three corners and three sides.
  • A rectangle is like a book, it has two long sides and two short ones.

Making Things Bigger or Smaller

You can also change these shapes. If you make a square bigger, it becomes a larger square, just like when you stretch out a rubber band. If you squish a circle, it might look more like an oval, which is another kind of shape!

So next time you play with blocks or eat pizza, remember: you're working with geometric figures!
