What are gender identities?

Gender identity is how you feel about being a boy, a girl, or something else inside your heart.

Imagine you have a toy box full of different toys, some are cars, some are dolls, and some are both! Just like how you can choose which toy to play with, your gender identity is like choosing the toy that feels most right for you. Some people feel like they're a boy, some feel like they're a girl, and some feel like they're somewhere in between or even something totally new.

What does it mean to have a gender identity?

  • If you always felt like a boy inside, your gender identity is boy.
  • If you always felt like a girl inside, your gender identity is girl.
  • If sometimes you feel like both, or neither, that's also totally okay, your gender identity can be something unique and special.

Think of it like wearing different clothes: some days you might wear a shirt with sleeves, and other days you might wear one without. It doesn’t mean you're wrong, it just means you have many ways to express yourself!
