What are galactic halos?

A galaxy is like a big city, and its galactic halo is like the quiet countryside that stretches far beyond the city limits.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy cars on a long road. The road is like the main part of the galaxy, where most of the stars (your toy cars) are zooming around. But if you look out into the distance, there are still some cars, just not as many, and they're spread out more. That's like the galactic halo, it’s a big, fluffy area that surrounds the main part of the galaxy.

What Makes Up the Galactic Halo?

The galactic halo is made mostly of old stars, gas, and even some dark matter, stuff we can’t see but still feels its pull. These old stars are like the sleepy grandparents who live far from the city center; they're not as bright or active as the younger ones.

Sometimes, you might find a big star or even a group of stars in the halo that weren't there before, it's like finding an unexpected surprise on your way home from school! These can be remnants of other galaxies that got pulled into our galaxy long ago.
