A fracture is when something breaks because it was pushed or pulled too hard.
Imagine you have a big chocolate bar, your favorite one, the kind with all the different flavors. Now, if you try to bend it really fast without letting it go soft, snap! It cracks into pieces. That’s like what happens in fractures, but instead of chocolate, it's bones or rocks.
What Makes Something Break?
When something is pushed, pulled, or bent too much, it can't take the force anymore and breaks. Think about a tree branch that snaps when a heavy snow falls on it. Or your favorite pencil breaking in half if you try to write with it too hard.
How Fractures Happen Every Day
Sometimes, fractures happen because of accidents, like falling off a bike or tripping on the sidewalk. Other times, they happen slowly, like when you twist your ankle playing tag and feel it pop.
Just like your chocolate bar can be broken into little pieces, bones can break in different ways too, some might just crack a little, while others might split all the way through!
Examples
- A child falls off a bike and breaks their wrist.
- An elderly person slips on ice and breaks their hip.
