Extreme environments are places that are super tough for most living things to survive in, like a super hot oven or a freezing freezer.
Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy, and suddenly it's dropped into a really hot oven. That’s kind of what happens to some creatures in extreme environments. They live in places that are either super hot, super cold, really dry, or maybe even under the ocean or on top of a mountain.
What makes them special?
Some animals live in the coldest parts of Earth, like Antarctica. It's so cold there, it's like being in a freezer all day! But some creatures are used to that and can still move around and find food.
Other places are super hot, like volcanoes or deserts, where it’s like being in a sauna every day. Some animals can handle the heat better than others, just like how you might be able to stay in the bath longer than your little brother.
In extreme environments, creatures have to be really strong and really clever, just like you when you're playing with your toys, but for much longer!
Examples
- Under the ice in Antarctica, tiny organisms survive in freezing conditions.
- Deep ocean trenches where sunlight never reaches are also extreme environments.
