What are estimators?

An estimator is like a friendly guesser who helps us figure out something we can't see right away.

Imagine you're trying to find out how tall your favorite tree is. You don’t have a ladder or a measuring tape, but you do know how tall you are. So you stand next to the tree and count how many of you would fit from the ground to the top. That’s like using an estimator, it gives you a good guess based on things you already know.

Estimators use what we know

An estimator is a tool or method that takes clues or facts we know and uses them to guess something else we don’t know yet. It's not perfect, but it’s helpful. Like when you estimate how many cookies are in the jar by looking at how full it looks.

Estimators can be simple or clever

Sometimes estimators are as simple as counting. Other times, they're like a smart friend who uses tricks to guess better, maybe they look at the size of the cookie, or how much space is left in the jar.

Estimators help us make sense of the world without needing all the details right away. They’re like your guesser friends in math and science!
