What are electromagnets?

An electromagnet is like a magnet that can turn on and off, just like a light switch.

Imagine you have a toy car that zooms around when you press a button, that’s kind of how an electromagnet works. Instead of a button, it uses electricity. Inside the electromagnet, there's a special wire called a coil, wrapped tightly around a piece of metal, like a nail.

How It Works

When you turn on the electricity, it flows through the coil, and poof, the nail becomes a magnet! The more electricity you send through the coil, the stronger the magnet gets. This is like giving your toy car extra speed by pressing the button harder.

But here's the fun part: when you stop the electricity, the magnet turns off again, just like your toy car slows down and stops. That means you can control it whenever you want, no need to keep it on all the time!

So, an electromagnet is a smart kind of magnet that uses electricity to work its magic (but we’ll say “magic” only once). It’s used in things like doorbells, speakers, and even big machines at the factory!
