What are dilation of blood vessels?

Dilation of blood vessels is when your blood vessels get bigger, just like a balloon stretches when you blow it up.

Imagine your blood vessels are like straws that carry juice (which is like blood) from one part of the body to another. When those straws get bigger, more juice can flow through them, this means more blood can reach your muscles or skin faster.

Why do they get bigger?

Sometimes, your body wants to send more blood to a place that needs it, like when you're running and your legs need extra energy. The blood vessels in your legs might stretch open, making it easier for the blood to flow through, just like opening a wider door so more people can walk in at once.

Other times, dilation happens because of something like heat, if you're outside on a sunny day, your blood vessels near the surface of your skin may stretch open to let more blood come out, helping you cool down. It’s like turning on a fan to blow hot air away!
