What are deformation features?

Deformation features are changes in shape that happen to something when it’s pushed, pulled, or squished, just like what happens to your face when you make a silly expression.

Imagine you have a big, soft playdough ball. If you press on one side with your hand, the playdough will stretch and flatten out on the other side. That’s a deformation feature, it shows how the playdough changed shape because of force.

When something is squeezed or stretched, its parts move in different ways:

• If you squish your playdough ball between two hands, it might flatten out, like a pancake.
• If you pull on both ends of the playdough, it could get longer and thinner, like taffy being pulled.

These changes are deformation features because they tell us how something responded to being touched or moved. Just like your face shows what you're feeling when you smile or frown, deformation features show what’s happening inside a material when it's pushed around!
