What are cultural mediators?

Cultural mediators are people who help others understand new cultures by explaining things in a way that feels familiar.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy, and suddenly someone comes along who speaks a different language and plays with toys you’ve never seen before. That person might feel confusing or even a little scary. A cultural mediator is like a friendly guide who helps you understand how to play with the new toys and learn the new language, without making it feel too hard.

How They Work

Cultural mediators use things you already know to explain new customs, languages, or ways of life. For example, if someone from another country doesn’t know how to say “thank you” in your language, a cultural mediator might show them how to wave and smile, because that’s how people say “thank you” where they’re from.

They're like the bridge between two worlds, helping everyone feel welcome and understood.
