What are critical points?

A critical point is like the most important spot on a slide, it’s where something special happens.

Imagine you're playing with a toy car on a wiggly ramp. As the car rolls down, sometimes it goes faster, and sometimes slower. A critical point is one of those spots where the car either speeds up the most, slows down the most, or just stops for a moment, like when it reaches the top of a little hill before rolling down again.

What makes a critical point special?

Think about your favorite roller coaster. When you're going up a big hill, you feel like you’re fighting gravity. But once you go over the top, you zoom down, that’s where the fun begins! A critical point is just like that big hill or the bottom of a valley: it's where things change from slow to fast or fast to slow.

Sometimes, the car might even pause for a second at the very top, that’s when it’s exactly balanced between going up and going down. Those are also critical points! A critical point is like the most important spot on a slide, it’s where something special happens.
