What are countable nouns?

Countable nouns are things we can count like toys, cookies, or cars.

Imagine you have a box full of lego blocks, each one is a separate piece, and you can tell how many there are. That’s what countable nouns are like: they’re things that come in separate pieces, and we use numbers to show how many of them there are.

If you have one candy, you say "I have one candy." If you have two candies, you say "I have two candies." The word changes when it goes from one to more than one, that’s a clue that the noun is countable!

Some things are not like lego blocks or candies. Think of something like water or sand, you can’t really count them as separate pieces. You might say "I have some water" instead of "one water." Those are uncountable nouns, and we’ll talk about them another time.
