What are computer programs?

A computer program is like a special recipe that tells a computer exactly what to do step by step.

Imagine you have a toy robot that can move forward, turn left, or turn right. If you want it to draw a square on the floor, you could give it simple instructions: go forward, turn right, go forward, turn right, and so on, until it finishes the square. That list of instructions is like a computer program.

A computer program is made up of many tiny directions that tell the computer what to do next. Just like how you follow a recipe to bake a cake, a computer follows the steps in a program to do something cool, like playing a game, writing a letter, or even controlling a robot.

What makes programs powerful is that they can be used again and again. You don’t have to tell your robot every time you want it to draw a square, just give it the same recipe, and it will do it perfectly each time!
